[HU] A Little No Limit Heads Up Strategy

A Little No Limit Heads Up Strategy

I have a little secret that took me a while to figure out. This is something I’ve finally learned after beating my head into the wall over and over again expecting different results each time. Hopefully I can save some of you heads up newbies the trouble. In small stakes HU matches, there is a simple little secret that will vastly improve your game.

This secret isn’t about beating the fish by the way. The fish aren’t the problem. The fish are easy to beat. You just play patient, aggressive, and wait for them to hang themselves. It’s not too difficult as long as you play a halfway decent game and avoid tilt.

The problem is the increasing number of decent tags (tight-aggressive) who have read a little HU strategy. They aren’t the greatest but they don’t hand out free money either. They can be hard to play against because they, like you, play an aggressive preflop game. Almost every hand they play they either raise or 3bet. All the other hands they fold. There is no limping in these guys’ arsenal.

Usually you would just want to avoid good players but there is some value in playing small stakes HU cash games against them in order to improve your own game. The opponents you will find at 100NL HU and below aren’t that great and you can make some money off them if you properly adjust to their styles.

What usually happens when you play one of these guys is the game will start out slow with you two making a couple probe bets here and there while you feel each other out. Slowly the match will heat up and the aggression intensify as you both raise and 3-bet each other more and more. Eventually someone will get caught up in the heat of the moment and overvalue a top pair type of hand or get caught in a big bluff and lose a stack. Usually it’s just luck that decides who this happens to first.

What a lot of people probably know but haven’t been able to adapt to is that the games have changed. You can’t just rely on preflop and flop aggression to win in HU cash games any more. It takes more than that. Online poker has been around long enough that the majority of your opponents have read up on basic strategy. There is still plenty of money to be made from them, but it takes a different style to get it.

A lot of these tag opponents only know how to play preflop and continuation bet the flop. In 6-max games, that’s just fine, but in HU games you can’t just raise every hand preflop, c-bet every flop and hope to win. It helps to know these things, but those alone aren’t enough.

The trick to taking advantage of these opponents is to get them out of their comfort zone. There are several ways to do this. The easiest method to try is to 4-bet them preflop with a wider range than you normally would. Some opponents have no idea what to do when you re-raise their reraise so they make big mistakes or fold.

The next easiest method is to make these people play more turns. If you catch the right opponent, he will have no idea what to do when he sees a turn card. What you do is call those preflop raises (in position) or 3-bets (in position) and call with anything on the flop and then bet the turn if they check. The reason this works is because a lot of opponents raise and 3-bet with such a wide range that they are going to be missing the flop. Their limited strategy comprehension doesn’t leave them with any ideas on how to play turns and rivers with missed hands.

The above two methods are easy to employ against certain opponents but many have encountered these tactics and they will play back at you by betting the turn, calling your bets, and checkraising you. These opponents do know how to put some heat on you and they would be good but they don’t know when to quit. This leads me to my next point…

This is the simple thing I mentioned in the title of this article. Against these overaggressive tags, the easiest way to make money is play against them as if they were fish. What I mean is don’t get yourself stuck into the ridiculous raising/3-betting war that HU matches eventually turn into. Just be patient, wait for good hands, and play them like you normally would.

The hardest part of using this strategy is having patience. It’s really annoying and frustrating to give up a lot of blinds in a HU match. Don’t worry about that for now. Yes, the blinds are coming around every single hand and yes, you are going to have to give a lot of them up. But that’s ok because the blinds you give up in a small stakes HU match are insignificant compared to the payoffs you can achieve against your opponents.

When you finally hit a real hand, your small stakes tag opponents will just assume you’re frustrated and finally bluffing. They won’t catch on that you’ve finally caught a real hand and they will either get attached to a big hand or try to bluff you off yours. It can happen when you win a 20bb pot calling down with top pair or it can happen in an all-in pot with your set vs their top pair. Whatever it is, they will eventually hang themselves against you. For some reason the common trend is for these people to just think that you are frustrated and are lashing out with nothing.

I think a part of the reason is that there is no good HU no-limit cash game strategy out there. The only HU strategy articles I’ve been able to find just say “raise a lot preflop and continuation bet the flop” but they don’t go any further. That’s not enough of a strategy. There’s still a turn and a river, there’s still learning how to adjust to your opponents, and there’s still a fold button.

Nobody has told these tags that there are opponents out there waiting to value bet them as if they are the fish. The thing is HU forces tag people to play a loose aggressive style their not used to. They don’t know how to adjust to their opponents’ adjustments. They just get caught up in their own flurry of aggression that they don’t ever stop and think about folding. All you need to do is play tight, play smart, and be aggressive with your good hands.

Nobody becomes a great heads up no limit player overnight but keep this article in mind as you learn; it will save you a lot of frustration.
